Political Will and Fear

Fear is the driving force behind most political decisions around the world. Upon talking about the current energy situation and alternative energy sources in a recent video blog a friend of mine asked why we in the US don’t have the same commitment to solar energy as Germany does. She knew very well the answer to this question. It all comes down to political will to make things happen in our country. Political will is driven from the bottom up. If the citizens of any country show enough distaste for what conditions and situations that are happening things will change. This can happen even in non-democratic countries and we are seeing this very thing happen in the world right now.

But what pressure is being used to force political will from the levels above the common citizenry of a country? What are the large corporations and multinationals doing to influence the politicians and why are they doing it? Obviously there is something that they want the politicians to give them or they want the protection of law to shield them in some manner. But what motivates these organizations? Most of the time it is some manifestation of fear.
